Tragic Love Story
There is a fascinating story connected to this incredible viewpoint that not many people are aware of. When you visit, the locals might share it with you after being asked several times. A man named David Gelli, who was captivated by the beauty of Kodaikanal, used to visit this place frequently. On his last visit with his newlywed wife, Irine Gelli, their honeymoon took a tragic turn. While they were busy taking pictures with the massive rocks in the background, Irine slipped and fell into the depths of the pillar rocks. Sadly, she lost her life.
A few days later, David, overcome with grief, managed to reach the top of the rocks. There, he placed a wooden white cross as a symbol of his love. He returned to the spot three days later for the final time. Since that day, nobody saw or heard from him again. It is believed that he jumped off the cliff in order to be reunited with his beloved wife. The Christian Church they had visited before going to the pillar rocks had their names recorded in its visitor’s register, which helped in identifying the two lovers.
Wooden White Cross
The wooden white cross, which kept David and Irine’s love alive, endured the monsoon climate of Kodaikanal for several years. Over time, the right horizontal side of the cross broke down. However, it seemed as if it was not meant to remain broken. Some students from Madras noticed this and inquired about it from nearby shopkeepers. After learning the heartfelt story, they took it upon themselves to maintain the cross.
The group of enthusiastic boys repainted it and took care of it for a couple of years. Unfortunately, this arrangement eventually came to an end, leaving behind a vanished wooden cross. Later, the government took over the responsibility for its upkeep. It was observed over time that the white cross kept falling. Eventually, the government gave up as well. Some adventurous groups also attempted to reach it, but the slippery vertical rocks prevented them from doing so. Today, the cross is nowhere to be seen, and those who learn about the story behind it still search for it when they arrive at the hilltop.
