A few years ago, trekking was allowed in these caves, but due to safety concerns, trekking is now banned in this place. There are many accidents happening in Guna Caves. Nearly 12 people have fallen into these caves. Even their bodies have not been recovered from these caves. One of the minister’s relatives also fell into these caves. There is no oxygen inside these caves, so rescue is not possible.

Therefore, the Tamil Nadu Government has installed a steel rope fence to prevent further loss of life. A steel rope fence has been set up 100 feet before the entrance to the caves, and visitors are advised to be extra cautious, especially during the rainy season.

Visitors can still admire the beauty of the caves from a distance and take photos of the centuries-old trees, the intricate roots, and the lush greenery. History of Guna Caves

Why guna cave called as devil’s kitchen?

During the 18th century, when American visitors explored Kodaikanal, they discovered several places. Guna Caves is one of the tourist spots they found. When they visited this place, they found numerous caves. Smoke came from these caves, and they thought there might be ghosts cooking, so they called it Devil’s Kitchen.

Some locals in the area believe that in ancient times, the Pandavas lived in these caves, while others believe that the Palaiyar tribe lived there.

When the actor Kamal Haasan shot the movie “Guna” in this location, the place became more popular among tourists. As a result, the number of tourists visiting increased, leading to the caves being called Guna Caves. This is how these caves got the name Guna Caves.

Entry Fee

There is an entry fee for Guna Caves. The fee collect by the forest department. At the entrance of the Guna Caves, you can purchase the entry ticket. The tickets are available until 4:00 PM. After that time, tickets will not be issued. The entry fees for 2024 are as follows:

• Adult and Child – 10 Rs
• Camera – 20 Rs

How to Reach

Guna Caves is located on the Pillar Rocks Road next to the Pine tree forest. You can easily reach this place from Kodaikanal lake or Kodaikanal bus stand. To reach this place you need to travel on Observatory Road – Poombarai Road – Ten mile Road – Pillar Rocks Road. You can reach by bike or car.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Guna Caves in Kodaikanal is from April to June or November to March, when the weather is pleasant and ideal for exploring the area. However, it is recommended to avoid visiting the caves during the months of July to October because of the rainy season, as the weather can be wet and cold. If you are traveling alone or with friends, it is important to exercise caution when visiting the caves. And, if you are visiting with family, it is advisable to avoid the caves during the months of July to October.
